As children spend most of their time staring at screens or at least playing games that are somehow related to the screens, establishing screen-free activities is a way of benefiting families to create content together, interact, and share meaningful experiences. Whether children are hiking evaluating autumn landscapes coming up with artworks or imaginative games away from the screen, they form meaningful and laughter-filled relationships with their peers. Appreciating the need for screen-free time enables families to have endearing moments of cherished time in the present-day world.
Street life thus becomes the new vein that sustains the idea of togetherness, and screen-free activities become the tune that sets harmony in the discordant songs of modern family schedules. Families as we are, become conductors, designating events that rise above frames through focused love and laughter shared. So pack up your bags, and let’s learn how to be a traveler and actively create memories that do not revolve around screens.
1. Outdoor Explorations
Go for hikes, walks, or, perhaps, bicycle rides as a family to the parks, nature trails, or any other attraction. Regarding the outside initiatives, they involve enjoyable activities such as nature walks, picnicking, and cycling among other activities, and thus constitute positive reinforcements of shared community experiences in addition to the provision of physical activities for the youth.
We enjoy hiking, and as a family, my husband and I take our hiking trips even when our son comes along. However, we are choosing lighter trails meaning every summer is a mountain adventure with our dog and sometimes grandpa. My son is especially keen on one trail leading to a waterfall near our newly purchased guest house in a mountainous region. Of all the shows my son enjoys, the program that thrills him most is where we feature the lakes close to our home or a new trek.
2. Creative Projects
Participate in projects helping the organization unlock its creative side and encourage the employees to think creatively and co-operatively. Art therapy and craft engagement encompass hobbies, painting, drawing, and any other form of creative work and play; creativity entails practical ideas that involve problem-solving, self-organization, and cooperation. Drawing, constructing a birdhouse, and planting flowers, fruits, and vegetables are activities where each family member feels free to express him/herself and put into practice their creativity.
In this case, my son may not possess the artistic abilities to the level that may be required, nevertheless, we love to engage in coloring with watercolors and modeling with the clay. Last year, he came home with clay figures after a brunch with Santa, and let’s paint them, which we did for a full afternoon. Clay modeling has become a special activity for all of us, where great simple materials develop into precious moments.
3. Family Game Nights
Have a specified period where families can come, sit together, and play board games and cards or group games. Whether it is a traditional Monopoly or Charades, creating a new game, makes people engage in friendly competition with others, use verbal communication skills, and laugh with friends. Introduce leisure evening games for the family, in effect getting a special day when everyone does not grumble but looks forward to it.
It gives me much joy when we sit down and fix our schedules for the family game night. My son loves to play Uno and we also have fun playing with Lego by providing him with pieces and letting him construct them himself. The standout experience that came to my memory was one day when my son who lacks a tolerance for defeat needed consolation after a match. We do not allow him to win easily although the idea can be fun; instead, we help to inculcate important lessons such as perseverance and manners on him.
4. Cooking Together
Sit in the kitchen where you take and prepare food for stressful moments and informal gatherings as a family. Engage the children in planning meals, shopping for food, and purchasing and preparing the food, so that they get to know how to cook as well as gain good eating practices. Doing something as simple as cooking allows you to plan together and understand the importance of coming together to share a meal as this gives a chance as a family to open up, talk, and strengthen the relationship.
Whenever I cook with my son, I do it with a lot of expectations and unusual expectation is always the rule of the day. He likes pretending to use some of his learning tower to help bake muffins and prepare jam. We have a tradition where we make blueberry jam every summer, and he so loved it he wanted to present it to his teachers back in kindergarten. It is not only educational like learning the basic skills of cooking but it has also strengthened our connection as much as our delicious concoctions.
The last quote as everyone would agree is powerful, relevant, and nearly perfect in its message:
The only thing that matters is family and love
states John Wooden.
Tablet activities are a blessing for families to have a quality time full of laughter and bonding while becoming more conscious of technology usage. Since families need to come together, sleep together, learn together, and share, such togetherness when based on common interests like outdoor activities, artistic pursuits, or meaningful dialogue is sure to tackle any hostility head-on and thrive long after the existence of social media platforms. When no screen is in our lives and we opt for face-to-face communication, let us find the beauty and embrace the family bond.
